Driving in Taiwan

Visitors to Taiwan may rent a car at the airport on presentation of a valid International driver's license, a valid passport and a contact person (company) in Taiwan. A copy of a credit card needs to be submitted for automatic payment of traffic fines, max period 30 days after first arrival in Taiwan.

    Driving a personal car with a Dutch license is not allowed. When involved in an accident the insurance is unlikely to pay any claim.
    With a valid Dutch International Driver's License is allowed up to 30 days after first arrival in Taiwan.  You may apply the extension at Motor Vehicles Office until either the International Driver's License or the Alien Residence Certificate (ARC) expires, up to a maximum of one year.

Convert Dutch Driver's License to Taiwanese Driver's License

You must prepare the required documents as follows:
  • Alien Residence certificate original and copy.
  • Dutch driver's license original and copy.
  • Chinese or English translation of the driver's license (see our website for translators)
  • Dutch driver's license and the translation must be authenticated by Taipei Representative Office in The Netherlands or by NTIO in Taiwan.

  • Two photos, identical.
  • Medical checkup certificate issued by a public hospital.

  • Exchange for Taiwan driver's license is base on mutual beneficiary contract.

Dutch Driver's Licenses - Renewal or Extension

Netherlands Trade and Investments Office does not take in requests for Dutch driver's license renewal or extensions.

If you are residing in a non-EU/EER country, renewal or extension of your Dutch driver's license needs to be processed by the appropriate authority in the Netherlands, the RDW (Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer). An application form for renewal of the document can be obtained by contacting the RDW.

What you need from NTIO:
Your application form needs to be accompanied by a Statement of Residence, that document can be issued by NTIO.

What to submit for the Statement of Residence:
- Copy of valid Dutch passport, including the picture page and arrival stamp page
- Visa or Alien Residence Card for Taiwan

Convert Taiwanese Driver's License to Dutch Driver's License in the Netherlands


Taiwan nationals can convert your Taiwanese Driver's License into Dutch Driver's License at the municipality you reside in the Netherlands.

What should you bring along?

At least the following:
- valid proof of identity (passport)
- your valid Taiwan driving licence
- two identical passport photographs
- a Certificate of Suitability, issued by the Cental Department of Driving Licences (CBR-Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheids-
  bewijzen)
- a special (green) application form
- a valid residence permit
