A Dutch passport is valid for travel to all countries in the world.

If you are traveling to countries outside the European Union please be aware that:

  • You might need a visitor visa to enter the country concerned
  • The country concerned may require a certain validity of your passport, e.g. validity should be at least 3 or 6 months.

Please check, well in advance, with the Embassy or Consulate of the country concerned if above requirements are applicable to you.

A Dutch passport remains property of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Proof of identification is the main purpose of a Dutch passport.

EXPIRED PASSPORTS

Dutch passports have a validity of 5 years after issuance.

The validity of your passport expires as soon as the expiry date on your passport is due. You cannot travel on an expired passport. Please renew your passport as soon as possible at the nearest Dutch Embassy or Consulate. We advise you to keep your passport valid by renewing it every 5 years. Be aware that in some cases you may lose the Dutch nationality in case your passport has expired for more than 5 years.

Passport expired and you have to travel soon?

If your are traveling soon and your passport is expired or is about to expire, please contact the nearest Dutch Embassy or Consulate immediately to discuss your situation. In some cases an emergency travel document can be issued.

Passport extensions are not possible, these are considered a renewal.
